Who We Are

Did you know…

  • 70% of LGBTQ students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment in their schools?
  • Over 90% of LGBTQ students regularly hear anti-LGBTQ comments at school – over a third from school staff?
  • Almost 40% of LGBTQ youth reported that no one ever intervened when homophobic remarks were heard.
  • LGBTQ students are five times more likely to skip school than their heterosexual counterparts?
  • LGBTQ students are three times more likely to attempt suicide?
  • As many as 10% of LGBTQ students who endured extended harassment because of their sexual orientation or gender identity/expression exhibit symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PSTD)?

Our job is to change these statistics, keep LGBTQ students in school and prevent physical and psychological harm that too often leads to self-destructive behavior, even suicide.

Safe Schools South Florida's mission is to create safer schools where all students can learn and thrive, regardless of real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, their own or that of their parents. We empower students; train educators, educate parents and the public and constantly monitor the effectiveness of our efforts through evaluations and surveys.

We currently operate in Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach County school districts which combined have more than 800,000 students, 940 schools and 80,000 paid employees. During sixteen years of operation, ad hoc educator trainings have also been held in Hillsborough and Martin Counties. We have trained well over 3,000 educators with 90 to 95% of them reporting improvements in their school environments after implementing recommended programs.

All trainings and facilities are handicapped accessible. Many programs are available in Spanish.
