Workshops For Education Professionals

These workshops are generally reserved for members of the county school districts who register through their own online education systems for tracking purposes – currently Miami-Dade and Broward Counties . Education professionals from private schools or other counties are welcome to contact Safe Schools South Florida and register to attend. Miami-Dade participants attend a 7 hour classroom presentation while Broward educators gather for six hours. Trainees are responsible to conduct a program on LGBTQ issues and bullying and submit a report on the results in order to earn re-accreditation points. CEUs are granted for licensed mental health professionals who attend the classroom workshops. Student and adult panelists present their experiences as sexual minorities dealing with society and educational systems.

Workshops are conducted at different locations around the counties in order to facilitate geographic distribution of education professionals.

Bullying & Sexual Minority Issues 101

An introduction and overview of issues faced by LGBTQ youth in our schools and issues faced by schools in meeting legal requirements to provide a safe environment for all students. Statistical information on bullying and harassment is presented as are ways for educators to recognize and intervene when problems arise.

Bullying & Sexual Minority Issues 201

A two-track program for classroom teachers and mental health professionals. Includes a recap of issues from the 101 level course followed by a more in-depth exploration of classroom issues and role playing ways to intervene for classroom professionals and a presentation on psychological issues of growing up LGBTQ for mental health professionals. This training also includes an overview and discussion of a 5 stage theory of sexual orientation identity development.

Bullying & Sexual Minority Issues 301

This workshop includes a review of Bullying and Sexual Minority Issues 201, and includes a focus on the important role that parents and guardians play in the well-being of their LGBTQ children.

Bullying & Sexual Minority Issues 401

This workshop includes a review of Bullying and Sexual Minority Issues 301, and includes a focus on timely research information about issues affecting LGBTQ youth in schools.

Transgender Issues in the Classroom

An in-depth look at the current scientific literature regarding gender, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation. Discussion includes ways to deal with transgender students to provide the legally mandated safe environment for all students. This training includes a panel of transgender persons and their family members who speak about their experiences in schools and with their families

Bullying & Sexual Minority Issues for Administrators

Comprised of segments from each of the foregoing workshops, this workshop for administrators for administrators takes a more in depth look at legal and policy requirements and compliance issues administrators may encounter. Attendees receive a copy of a comprehensive handbook for administrators. This training inlcudes a panel of LGBTQ youth who speak about ther school and family experiences.
