What is a Gay-Straight Alliance?
As its name says, a gay-straight alliance is an education and community service organized by students to build alliances among all students whether they identify as gay, bisexual, transgender, heterosexual, questioning, or anything else – and to acknowledge and embrace the diversity among us all.
Who participates in GSAs?
GSAs are open to all students who feel that harassment and discrimination are wrong. Many youth have seen the effects of harassment on their friends, families or themselves.
Are public schools required legally to allow GSAs?
According to the Federal Equal Access Act, any public school, which has any non-curricular clubs in existence, must allow a GSA. For more information visit www.studentprideusa.org and www.aclu.org.
Are GSAs about sex?
No. GSAs are about the lives of LGBTQ youth, their friends, and the troubles these youth too commonly face in schools. Students involved in GSAs are no more likely to discuss sex than those in drama clubs or chess clubs.
